How To Manage Your Anxiety
When you enroll in a holistic mental health treatment facility, one of the most important skills you learn is how to better manage your anxiety. You’ll learn how to meet the symptoms with the appropriate coping mechanisms. Below are a few strategies we teach at Rose Hill Center to help individuals better manage their anxiety:
1. Re-Evaluate Your Thought Patterns
An anxiety disorder can cause negative thoughts to plant themselves in your mind, distorting your perception of the situation. It can make it difficult to evaluate how dangerous the circumstance is and the appropriate response. One way to cope with these distorted thought patterns is to challenge your fears. Ask yourself if your fears are real or if you’re blowing the situation out of proportion. Then, you can determine how you can regain control of your life.
2. Try Deep Breathing Exercises
When a child is overwhelmed, a parent will often tell them to take a few deep breaths. Similarly, if your anxiety is overwhelming, you should try taking deep, calming breaths. Keep your lips apart and exhale through your mouth. Then, inhale through your nose for four seconds. After four seconds, hold your breath for about seven seconds before exhaling for close to eight seconds. This method is known as the 4-7-8 technique, which is an excellent way to control your anxiety.
3. Get Moving
Research shows that exercise can decrease feelings of anxiety. Maybe you need to take a quick walk to get away from the situation. Conversely, try to stretch out with some yoga for fifteen or twenty minutes. The goal of the exercise is to focus on your body rather than your mind.
4. Write Down Your Anxieties
Sometimes you need to write down what you’re thinking about. This gets your thoughts out of your brain and makes the situation feel less daunting. In addition, it can help you work through the challenge. Writing down your thoughts gives you the opportunity to take a step back from the situation, look at it analytically, and come up with solutions.
